Maverick Philanthropists in
Action
Hands on Hips is
a non-profit corporation set up by author Barbara Sher to
support
various projects primarily in the village of Ortahisar, Turkey. Details
of the projects are
given at the Kilim
Women website. Examples of the Kilim rugs woven at the weaving
school are posted at regular intervals on the Kilim Women blog.
Berkat
is non-profit organization founded by the Czech journalist Petra
Prochazkova to
provide victims of the wars in Chechnya and Afghanistan, most of them
widowed or
orphaned, with outlets for their talents so that they can become
self-supporting. The
projects include Happy
Flying Carpets in Afghanistan, which provides looms, wool and
other supplies to Fakiro and other villages close by. Some of the
carpets and other
handicrafts are then sold or given as gifts to sponsors in Prague.
Projects in Chechnya
include Friend-to-Friend, which helps women and children who have been
abandoned or
widowed as a result of the war, the Iman Center orphanage, and a
children's dance
troupe. Petra Prochazkova's book "Aluminum
Queen" is also available at Berkat's
website. It provides an illuminating look at Chechnya's slide from a
middle-class society
into war and chaos.
Note: Maverick
Philanthropy is a website set up on my own initiative in order to help
publicize small-scale projects of this type. I hope to find and feature
many more
examples of individuals simply seeing a need and acting to
fill it. If you have or know
of similar projects, please feel free to
contact me at: statoun@maverickphilanthropy.org
